How to Keep Your Baby Warm in a Baby Carrier This Winter

It’s cold outside. During wintertime, many parents wonder about clothing and how to keep their babies warm when venturing out. Some people even stay in to avoid the risks. But there is no reason why you should stay at home. Heading outside to get fresh air or to meet people could be the best thing you do today. For you and your baby. But there are a few things to consider before heading out in the cold.

Why Baby Carriers Are Excellent in Winter

One of the benefits of a baby carrier is how warm it keeps children (and parents!) in winter. By carrying your baby close to you in a baby carrier you provide your baby with your own body heat. Meaning, the baby doesn't need to use its own energy or calories to stay warm. The risk of the child getting cold and suffering from hypothermia is therefore dramatically decreased.

How to Dress Your Baby for Cold Weather Babywearing

1. Layer Up

Layering is the most effective strategy for regulating temperature on the go.

  • Base layer: A thin wool garment directly against your baby's skin. Wool is warm even when wet and naturally wicks moisture.

  • Middle layer (for very cold days): A sweater and thicker pants.

  • Outer layer: A baby overall and a puffer jacket for you — worn over both of you together.

The layers work together: wool traps warmth and transfers it outward, while the jacket locks it in. If you get too warm, you can easily remove a layer.

2. Cover Head, Hands, and Feet

Babies lose heat quickly from their extremities. Their circulation isn't as strong as adults', and since they're not moving around, they get cold faster than you do. On top of that, if they are sitting/lying in the stroller they are not moving around as much as you. Keep the baby’s feet and hands covered, and make sure that there is no skin exposed.

  • Head: A snug-fitting wool or fleece beanie is essential.

  • Hands and feet: Mittens and warm socks or booties.

3. Use a Baby Carrier Cover

A baby carrier cover is a game-changer for autumn and winter outings. The Najell All Weather Cover fits universally over most carriers and features:

  • Water-repellent outer material

  • Removable fleece lining for extra warmth

  • Removable baby hood for wind and snow protection

It keeps your baby sheltered from wind, rain, and snow without overheating them.

Safety Tips for Winter Babywearing

Keep airways clear. Always make sure your baby's nose and mouth are uncovered and that no fabric — hood, scarf, or jacket — is blocking their breathing. This is especially important when wearing multiple layers.

Watch your footing. Icy and slippery ground is a real hazard when you're carrying extra weight. Use ice grips on your shoes, stick to gritted paths, and slow down. If conditions are very icy, consider whether it's worth heading out at all.

How do i know my baby is at the right temperature and is warm enough

To make sure your baby isn’t too cold, feel on the tummy. Add another layer or go inside for a coffee or hot cocoa if needed.
