When do you need a baby nest? We answer your most common baby nest questions

Whether you call it a baby nest, sleep pod, playnest, sleep nest, cocoon — or a SleepCarrier — these cosy little beds are everywhere. And once you’ve held a newborn in one, it’s easy to see why. They’re soft, cozy and instantly make any space feel a little more “baby-ready”. But when should you actually use one? And how do you do it safely?

We’ve gathered the most common questions about baby nests. The answers are right here.

What is a baby nest?

A baby nest is a soft, portable sleep and rest solution that creates a snug, womb-like feeling for your baby. Many parents use one during the newborn phase to help their baby feel secure and settle into short naps or quiet rest.

Some baby nests, like the SleepCarrier, come with handles and even fit in a pram, making it easy to move from room to room or bring along wherever you go.

When is a baby nest useful?

A babynest is perfect when you want a safe, cosy little space for your baby that you can move around the house. It’s especially handy for:

  • Short naps (at home or while you’re nearby)

  • Cuddly rest time on the sofa or in the living room

  • Travel — hotels, family visits, or weekend trips

  • Creating a familiar sleeping spot for your baby when routines are still new

In a way, a babynest is like a mini sanctuary, a cuddly, portable “home base” for your baby. And for many parents, that feeling of calm is worth its weight in gold.

Is it safe to use a baby nest?

Yes, when used correctly and under supervision. A traditional babynest is designed for short periods of rest and supervised sleep, not for unsupervised or overnight use. For the safest use, always place it on a flat, firm surface and keep the surrounding area free from loose blankets, pillows or toys.

If you’re looking for a cosy sleep solution that’s safe for overnight use, the SleepCarrier is designed for supervised overnight sleep, giving your baby the same snug, womb-like comfort as a babynest, but with the support needed for longer rest.

How long can I use a baby nest?

Babynests are most commonly used during the newborn phase, and many parents continue to use them for the first year. Exactly how long you can use one depends on the design and your baby’s development. Most babies outgrow the babynest stage once they become more mobile. This often happens when they start rolling over, pushing up, or moving around more confidently.

All Najell baby nests are safe to use from day one. The SleepCarrier can be used as a baby nest and playmat up to around 12 months. However, we recommend stopping the carrying function once your baby starts rolling, while still using it as a cosy resting space.

Babynest vs. SleepCarrier — what’s the difference?

A traditional babynest is brilliant for early life, short naps, and travel. But as your baby grows, you might want a sleep solution that adapts with them.

That’s where the Najell SleepCarrier enters the scene. It’s designed to be a cosy, portable sleep solution that grows with your baby, giving you the flexibility of a babynest but with more structure and support. Think of it as the next step when you want the same softness, but with a bit more stability.
