The benefits of safe babywearing
Babywearing is more than just convenience — it’s a bonding experience.
A well-positioned baby feels calm and secure while you enjoy the freedom of hands-free parenting. Studies show that babywearing helps regulate the baby’s temperature, breathing, and heart rate, while also reducing crying and promoting healthy attachment.
In this guide, we’ll share simple babywearing safety tips, including how to position your baby correctly and what to avoid.
Using the T.I.C.K.S rule when carrying
The T.I.C.K.S rule is a checklist created by the UK Sling Consortium. The guideline helps parents position their baby safely in the carrier. You should always follow the T.I.C.K.S rule when using any Najell Baby Carrier.
T.I.C.K.S stands for:
Tight: The carrier should hold your baby snug and close to your body.
In view at all times: You should always be able to see your baby's face without moving any fabric.
Close enough to kiss: Position your baby high up in the carrier so that you can kiss the top of their head.
Keep chin off chest: Make sure there's at least a finger's width space under their chin to keep airways open.
Supported back: The baby's back should be supported in its natural position, and the carrier should provide firm support.
Najell's baby carriers are all designed to naturally guide you into safe positioning following the T.I.C.K.S. principles.
How to ensure comfort for all
Baby’s positioning:
Legs in an “M” shape, knees higher than bottom for hip support
Head supported but free to move (neck support up to earlobes for newborns)
Natural C-shaped spine, bum seated low in the carrier for proper support
Baby’s visibility & breathing:
Face always visible, nose and mouth uncovered
At least a finger-width space between chin and chest
Parent’s comfort & fit:
Carrier snug but not too tight— able move freely without strain
Weight evenly distributed across shoulders, back, and hips
Baby positioned high enough to kiss their head easily
Temperature & clothing:
Dress baby in breathable layers—carrier adds warmth
In cold weather, use a babywearing jacket or weather cover instead of bulky clothes
With Najell's breathable airmesh material and adjustable settings, keeping you and your baby comfortable in the baby carrier is easier than ever.
Common babywearing mistakes to avoid and how to fix it
There are a few common mistakes to avoid, but the most important thing is that your baby is happy and comfortable, and the position works for both of you.
1. Wearing the carrier too loosely
Fix: Tighten the straps for a snug fit, like a cozy hug.
2. Baby’s chin resting on the chest
Fix: Ensure at least a finger-width space between baby’s chin and chest to keep airways open.
3. Facing baby outwards too early
Fix: Wait until baby is over 5 months or has good neck control before carrying forward-facing.
4. Carrying baby too low
Fix: Position the waistbelt high on your hips for better weight distribution and to keep baby close enough to kiss.
5. Overdressing baby inside the carrier
Fix: Dress baby in one layer less than usual and use breathable fabrics to regulate temperature.
