First foods from around the world: how countries wean their babies differently
Did you know it’s very common for a baby’s first taste, look and feel of food to be reflective of their culture’s native cuisine? We've delved into the buffet of first foods introduced to babies in their first year.
Japan
A common and traditional food given to babies during weaning is a baby rice porridge known as ‘okayu’. It’s simple to digest and can easily be transitioned onto carrot or pumpkin puree. Miso soup is also not that uncommon to offer.
Mexico
It’s common for babies to be weaned off milk and introduced to food like tortillas, avocados, and fruits like papaya. They also offer arroz con leche (a bit like rice pudding) and refried beans.
Vietnam
The first solid food given to babies in Vietnam is usually pureed rice porridge, cooked with either water or chicken broth until the rice has broken down. Further down the line, they offer Thịt Bò Hầm which is fine mince beef, and a Bánh Flan which is a bit like a sweet custard- made from eggs and milk.
